The procedure Removing part or all of a toenail is a medical procedure- toenail surgery. A local anesthetic is used to numb your toe and then the nail is removed. A chemical called phenol is applied to the area to prevent the nail growing back or becoming ingrown in the future. A course of antibiotics may be prescribed if your nail is infected.
